Katahdin Sheep
Katahdin Hair Sheep were originally developed on the Piel Farm in north central Maine near Mt. Katahdin. The purpose was to develop a new line of non-wool producing sheep that would not require shearing, would prove hardy, reliable mothers, with good flocking instincts and high fertility.
Though we do not use hormones or antibiotics with our sheep, we are very concerned about controlling internal parasites. To avoid using dewormers indiscriminately and contributing to the increasing drug resistance problem, we use a system of checking for anemia called FAMACHA in conjunction with fecal egg counts to determine when dewormers are necessary. This allows us to minimize the use of dewormer while maintaining the health of our flock.
Our flock participates in the Voluntary Scrapies Flock Certification Program. Our ram is an RR and many of our ewes are RR or QR. We are also members of Katahdin Hair Sheep International. Registered breeding stock is available.
